What is Toastmasters?

Do you want to become a better speaker? Do you want to become a stronger leader? Do you want to run more effective meetings? Do you want to have fun while growing in self-esteem? If you do, a Toastmasters Club may be the place start. Toastmaster Clubs are positive, enjoyable places to learn to communicate more effectively. Building camaraderie and including lots of humor at meetings help to chase the jitters away! If there is enough interest in Niverville, a Toastmasters Club can be formed right in your hometown! Interested persons may contact Sylvia Nilsson-Barkman at 326-3893.

Toastmasters is an organization devoted to public speaking and leadership development. From a humble beginning in 1924 at the YMCA in Santa Ana, California, Toastmasters International has grown to become a world leader in helping people become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience. The nonprofit organization now has nearly 250,000 members in 106 countries and offers a proven - and enjoyable - way to practice and gain communication and leadership skills.

Who can join?

Toastmasters is an incorporated organization that operates with a Constitution that states that members be a minimum of 18 years of age and that fees be paid to Toastmasters International who provide the learning materials keep necessary records for awards. The club will send all applications to Toastmasters' World Headquarters. The new member receives a New Member Kit that should arrive in the mail in about 10 days. The New member Kit includes materials to get started on the two tracks that help to build better speakers and leadership skills:

a) The Communication Track includes speech-making and following manuals that are proven to help to develop the speaker. This is a well developed program that leads speakers through stages of speech making - how to write various speeches (inspirational, motivational, persuasive, entertaining etc.), using gestures, using vocal variety, using props, injecting humor etc.

b) The Leadership Track provides opportunities to practice running meetings, taking on leadership roles, organizing special events and campaigns etc. As you progress you move from being a Competent Communicator and Competent Leader to being a Distinguished Toastmaster.

Most clubs meet weekly for an hour or two. Participants practice and learn skills by filling a meeting role, ranging from giving a prepared speech or an impromptu one to telling a joke, making a toast or serving as a timer, evaluator or grammarian. There is no instructor; instead, each speech and meeting is critiqued by a member in a positive manner, focusing on what was done right and what could be improved. Members help each other to communicate more effectively, become better listeners, improve presentation skillsand increase self confidence.

What help can be expected to start a club?

Toastmasters from an existing club assist interested people to start a new club and access resources for running meetings. A club in Niverville would be part of District 64 which includes clubs in Manitoba and North Western Ontario - a total of 98 clubs. Sponsors and mentors will be appointed from these clubs by the District. Members run their club as they like and decide where and when they will meet and what fees will be required to operate. Fees are always very reasonable. An Area Governor is also available to assist clubs to deal with internal issues and extend invitations to District conferences, speech contests and officer training sessions. Toastmasters follow a Distinguished Club Plan that motivates members to progress and clubs to maintain membership.
